Sunday morning, I decided to take a walk. The weather was just right; Pandora was playing the best music; and I was lost in my own little world. All of a sudden, I heard a crunching sound. Looking down, I saw the street was littered with dead beetles. I looked ahead and behind, but didn’t see any other black specks on the ground. Then I looked up; there was a huge streetlight above me. In fact, it was the only streetlight on the road. I assumed, from prior knowledge, the beetles had swarmed towards the light source the night before and perished.
While there are various theories around why insects are attracted to lights, it’s obvious that it is dangerous to their existence. On any given night, the life of millions of bugs and insets end. The light entices these creatures into believing that it is a safe haven and/or navigational aid. It’s natural to conclude that a beetle, “flying by”, would join the party if hundreds of other creatures were already there. Unfortunately, the artificial light confuses their senses. The bugs circle the heat source, until they lifelessly hit the ground.
When deciding which college to attend, don’t go somewhere just because your friends are going there. My example here is a bit somber, but it’s true to life. Part of the “college experience” involves doing new things and meeting new people. I don’t want you to end up like the beetles because you’re somewhere that doesn’t allow you to reach your full potential. Attend a college where you’ll not only survive, but where you’ll thrive.

On a much lighter note, I do exaggerate when it comes to insects, bugs, rodents, etc. There were probably not as many beetles as I imagined…but there were A LOT! Happy Tuition Tuesday!
